Sneak a cookie

I know all you parents do it. I also know you feel guilty about it. But did you know it's completely normal? I am talking about sneaking snacks when your children are in bed!

My children weren't terribly fond of naps. And usually when I had finally wrestled them into submission, the ensuing exhaustion made me want a nap, too. But I often wanted to satisfy my sweet tooth. If I got a cookie when my daughter was playing, I often hoped I could stuff it into my mouth without her noticing. But, without fail, she noticed. She'd be playing and turn around to ask me a question or show me something and see the suspicious and stuffed-cheek look on my face and immediately inquire, "what're you eating?". Well, what am I supposed to say? She knows I am eating a cookie! She then gives me that sweet, innocent, begging look and the only thing I think is that if she gets some, I'm gonna run out!

I know it is unreasonable, because in all the time I've been alive, the store has never run out of cookies, but my selfish nature just kicks in there! And sometimes, I am munching on the delectable sweets when supper is quickly approaching. I can't tell her, "no, it'll ruin your supper", because her response would be, "well, what about your supper?"! So, debating and dealing with all the potentials of eating my cookies when my child was awake, I determined that it wasn't worth the effort to try to sneak one. However, I came to love naptime, 'cause when she was in bed, I'd run to the cupboard and get my fill!

Don't feel bad about it. It's ok. You're not a terrible parent or role model, nor are you unusually selfish. Sometimes we just want to have special treats to ourselves.

So, after you tuck the little ones in bed tonight, reward yourself for a hard week's work and get a cookie!

Have a great weekend!
Phoebe
