The Public Toilet

Kids are tiny. Everything about them is tiny. They must try to negotiate being so tiny in a big person world. The restaurant seats and tables are big; the theater seats are for the size and weight of an adult; counters are too high; toilets are made for an adult body.

It is frightening to try to adjust to an adult world when technology advances to a point where children must work harder and deal with unexpected surprises. I was at a movie theater once with my daughter, Isabella, who was two years old. She had already potty trained herself and needed to use the ladies' room. Her bottom was really tiny, but she did well to sit on the seat and hold on while she conducted her business. That is, she was pretty good at it until the toilet automatically flushed while she was sitting there!

I saw the look of surprise, her eyes popped open, her legs contracted, bringing her up a little, and she stared at me, stunned. But then surprise turned into stark fear. She jumped from that toilet so fast, that it was all I could do to keep her from making a mess and then to encourage her to finish cleaning up. After that, for a solid year, she refused to use any toilet that wasn't ours. I had to bring her home to use it every time we were out. I didn't blame her; those things go off with me sitting there, too, sometimes. But I'm not likely to fall in during the operation!
