The Infant Roommate

Ah, the joys of being a young parent! My first apartment was a one-bedroom tiny little place where I raised my oldest, Arianne, for the first year and a half of her life. In quarters so tiny, it is tough to get away far enough to take a sufficient time out when the challenges of raising an infant become overwhelming.

My friend tells me of her cat constantly waking her up at 4:30 in the morning. He likes to be watched when he eats. When she tells me of these early morning dining sessions, which annoy her to no end, I simply nod and think how lucky she is.... My children kept me up A LOT. When I would finally get to sleep and be able to enjoy it, they would be fully awake and ready to play. Drat!

Arianne's crib was on the wall opposite the foot of my bed. She had great wispy hair that stuck out everywhere. She'd see the sun rise and she would wake up with it. I would not. She would stand on her toes, look out at me snug and sound in my bed, and start chanting. "Mommeeeee. Moooomeee. MOUOUmee!" With each utterance of my name, she would get louder and shorter... until she would shout one final call, "MOMMY!"

Me, I'd start and sit up, surprised, half awake, and she would be right there... in my face, so to speak. Immediately, she would delight in the reward for her hard work, dance around the crib, and smile gleefully, as if to say, "Well, now that you're up..."

Kids are fun... especially first thing in the morning. Funny, as I began to adjust to her schedule and become more of a morning person, she would become less and less of one, until the day I tried to wake her up for school. Grunts, kicks, and rolling over was my reward.

Funny.
