I not Cheyenne, I Precious!

We all have pet names for our children and even for other children. We often find ourselves calling little ones "pumpkin" or "sweetheart" or "peanut" or, my personal favorite, "precious". I don't know why we do it, other than it is a way of displaying affection for a child. Even children who are strangers to me get a comforting description from me. It makes them feel special. It ought to. They are.

I called my oldest, Arianne, "pumpkin". Rather, I called her "punkin". I have friends who called their children "peanut". These are really sweet names. But children need to understand the meaning behind the names, and know what their given names really are. My children knew their pet names and the purpose of them. They understood all was well when I called them by that name. Cheyenne, my second child, was notoriously called, "precious". She loved it when I called her that.

One day, when she was about three or four years old, I called Cheyenne by her given name. She wasn't in any trouble or anything; it's just what I chose to address her by. She turned around and looked at me, with a glint in her eye, and informed me, "I not Cheyenne, I Precious!" Yes, indeed, that was precious indeed. I chuckled and told her she was and would always be quite precious. But she was also Cheyenne. The two names were not exclusive of one another. It was a very cute and fun moment with her.

What are your pet names for your children? Do they understand how very special they are to you? Why do you call them those names? What do they convey? I wanted my daughter to know how my heart felt about her, that she was Truly Precious!

Happy parenting!
Phoebe
