Battling the Winter Crud

So many people around me are getting sick. It must just be the time of year. Of course, this has been an interesting winter. We have had some very cold snaps and then days of warm, spring-like weather. That kind of climate confusion is sure to wreak havoc on even the most accommodating immune systems!

I suffer from chronic illness. Actually, I take that back. I have been diagnosed with several chronic and debilitating illnesses. But I don't really suffer from them. I am unusually healthy, given what war rages within me. But I have decided a few things are very healthy to have around:

  1. a humidifier. It is #1 because it is NUMBER ONE. A humidifier keeps the temperature and humidity in a room relatively consistent. Allergens and germs are adhesive and humid air can grab hold of those things so you don't breathe them. I swear by my humidifier and I highly recommend you get one, or at least one for your bedroom. Keep it running all day so the humidity is up and offering the best protection while you're sleeping and vulnerable to get illness. So many parents I know say they have them in the children's rooms, but not their own! Children aren't the only ones who need them!
  2. Epsom Salt: Great stuff for aches and pains. Also good for creating nasal cleansers. I like it for the bathtub when I am hurting a lot.
  3. Hand sanitizer, handy Clorox wipes: these things are great at keeping germs at bay. Wash your hands regularly, even after using the hand sanitizer. Use lotion so it doesn't dry your hands out.
  4. Fruits, veggies, hot drinks, water. Good nutrition and proper hydration works wonders on keeping us well.

Try to stay healthy this season. All of these things are great to have all year round, as different things affect us different times of the year. My allergy attacks often result in upper respiratory infection, so I keep the humidifier going all the time, but low in the summer since the air outside is humid.

To your good health!
Phoebe
